WETLAND PROJECT

The Team: Richard Zook, Rohin, Sailesh and Shyam

The actual physical work started from 12 of Feb 2011 on site but rico’s effort was from much earlier. The before and after photos will give you an idea. The project site at Ramdurg approx was procured by Wild Life SOS which is 3hour drive from Hampi. The area has an array of wildlife species including sloth bears and has good diversity of bird life. Ramdurg has also been projected as a field station and research centre for wildlife. Permaculture concept was the driving force to design the wetland with an objective of habitat and water safe source as well as corridor for wildlife. The permaculture basic – flows, patterns, zonation, site analysis helped to understand the area and design the wetland. It was a small effort from all of us who were involved team & volunteers.

Great Cormorant

Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo:
Distribution ; Eastern North America, Europe, Asia & Parts of Africa & Australasia. Found in large bodies of freshwater, coastlines & estuaries. feeds on fish, invertebrates & amphibians. In Japan & China fishermen have trained & used these cormorants for fishing. For last 3 -4 years cormorants have been visiting Mirik lake. This individual (non breeding adult) has stayed back as guest in the lake because its left metacarpals has been broken due to some accident. Sad part is that it will not be able to fly, so cannot migrate and there is still danger to it. GOOD part is there is plenty of fish in the lake, and will not die of hunger and it will be waiting for its friends to return this year. Hopefully its friends will see that "WE" have not bothered their friend and see how hospitable "WE" are.
